MACROMEDIA FLASHEditing symbolsWhen you edit a symbol, Flash updates all the instances in the movie. You edit symbols in symbol-editing mode. You can edit such that the symbol you are editing is all that you see, or you can use the Edit in Place command to edit the symbol in context with the other objects on the Stage. Other objects appear grayed out to distinguish them from the symbol you are editing. To edit a symbol in place:

The symbol attached to the instance opens in symbol-editing mode. You
can now edit the symbol. All instances of the symbol throughout the movie
are updated to reflect your edits. While editing a symbol, use any of the drawing tools, import media, or create instances of other symbols. To finish editing a symbol and return to editing the movie: Do one of the following:
